Eva Longoria’s ex and TV star Tyler Christopher dead at 50

Tyler Christopher, a star of General Hospital and ex-husband of actress Eva Longoria, has died. He was 50.

The actor, who played Nikolas Cassadine on the soap from 1996 to 2016, died of a heart attack at his home in California, his co-star Maurice Benard said.

“It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Tyler Christopher,” Benard said on Instagram on Wednesday.

“Tyler was a truly talented individual who lit up the screen in every scene he performed and who enjoyed bringing joy to his loyal fans through his acting.

“Tyler was a kind soul and a wonderful friend to all who knew him.”

Benard said Christopher was “an advocate for better mental health and substance use treatment who spoke openly about his struggles with bipolar depression and alcohol.”

“We are beyond devastated by the loss of our dear friend and are praying for his children and his father,” his message ended.

Among the comments was one from The Young and the Restless star Doug Davidson, who wrote: “Oh my God. He was such a beautiful person and a great actor. I’m in total shock. May God bless his soul 🙏.”

“Sorry to hear this,” said actress Risa Dorken.

“This is like a punch in the stomach. A wonderful man who passed away far too soon. You and his family will be in my prayers. ❤️🙏,” said another commenter.

“This breaks my heart,” said one user.

General Hospital executive producer Frank Valentini confirmed Christopher’s death.

“I am heartbroken by the news of Tyler Christopher’s passing,” he said in a statement to People.

“He was kind, an incredible actor and a dear friend who was loved by our GH family and Nikolas Cassadine fans.”

“On behalf of everyone at General Hospital, our sincere condolences go out to his loved ones at this difficult time.”

Christopher received four Emmy nominations for his role as Nikolas Cassadine.

He played Stefan DiMera on Days of Our Lives from 2018 to 2019 and won an Emmy for his performance.

Christopher was married to Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria from 2002 to 2004.

“We dated, then we stayed friends and we dated again,” Christopher told Soap Hub after their divorce in 2004.

“(Being married) is harder than we thought,” Longoria said, “we both have our habits that we won’t give up.”

Christopher married former ESPN reporter Brienne Pedigo in 2008.

The couple had two children, Greysun and Boheme, before calling it quits in 2021.

In 2019, the actor was placed under the custody of his sister, Susan Asmo Baker, as he struggled with alcohol withdrawal.

Baker had filed for custody after her brother was hospitalized following life-saving surgery prompted by a skull fracture he suffered in a fall.

During the court proceedings, the actor claimed that his sister spent $40,000 of his money to pay off her credit card debt.

“I never in a million years thought I would be taken advantage of by a family member,” Christopher said in a 2023 interview with Bloomberg.

Baker denied the claim, calling it an unproven “allegation.”

The guardianship ended in 2021.
