A woman who allegedly broke through an emergency exit and walked onto the tarmac of an Aussie airport, coming dangerously close to a Qantas flight about to take off, has been charged.
The incident took place at Canberra Airport at 7.30pm on Wednesday, with bizarre footage showing the woman slowly surrounding the plane, wearing slippers and using her mobile phone as she approached, while a bewildered pilot and co-pilot emerged from the cockpit watching.
The woman can be seen waving her arms, apparently trying to make contact with the pilot from the ground, before an airport crew member catches on to the antics and walks over to the woman.
Mysterious woman reportedly missed her flight
According to witness reports, the woman apparently “missed her flight and decided she could still catch it.”
“(She) pushed past the staff at the door, ran onto the tarmac and ran to the plane. She was literally standing underneath it, next to the front wheel,” one traveler wrote on Facebook.
“Luckily the pilot was alerted, or saw her, and turned off the engine. He then came back into the gate and ran out the door.
“The thing is, at no point, even with a lot of staff around, did no one stop her. So much for safety. If she had been at the cricket, she would have been tackled by a gang,” the traveler continued.
‘I feel sorry for the people stuck on the plane right now. That was ready to take off.’
Traveler ‘used the emergency exit’ to access the tarmac, Qantas says
Speaking to Yahoo News Australia, a Qantas spokesperson confirmed the woman used an emergency exit to access the tarmac, but her reason for approaching the plane could not be verified.
It is understood the flight was delayed as airport staff arrested the woman before she was apprehended by police. Passengers were told to remain on board the plane while officials cleared it for takeoff.
The Australian Federal Police confirmed to Yahoo News on Thursday that the woman has been arrested and remains in custody.
“There are no flight delays and the airport is operating normally. Further details will be provided in due course,” a police spokeswoman said.
