Although the repurposing of Macquarie Park is separate from these reforms, the Planning Department will lead the repurposing. Planning Minister Paul Scully said it would provide more density close to the city.

“This repurposing is an opportunity to deliver more homes close to the CBD and close to well-connected public transport, including Macquarie Park Metro station,” he said.

“We want density in areas like this to be part of Sydney’s future, supporting homes and jobs that are accessible to everyone in the community. The growth of the precinct has the potential to deliver a huge economic boost and secure Macquarie Park’s reputation as a world-class place for business, innovation, research and education.”

The government says the redevelopment will also include eight hectares of new public space, a large indoor recreational facility and walking and cycling paths. There are also proposals for two schools.

The government’s push for higher population density is likely to put Minns on a collision course with a number of local authorities. Herald revealed last week that Scully had written to mayors urging them to “continue to meet their legal responsibilities” to approve more homes.

“I ask that you immediately begin identifying sites and permitting more low- and mid-rise housing,” Scully wrote in a letter to the mayor.
