NGC 891 edge-on galaxy: an image – 8 Oct. 2023

We’ve imaged the beautiful edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 891 and the many small galaxies in the same field of view. The resulting photo is below.

The above image is from the average of 19 exposures of 120 seconds, unfiltered, taken remotely with the ARTEC250+Paramount ME+C3Pro61000EC robotic unit available as part of the Virtual Telescope Project facility in Manciano, Italy. The image has been carefully processed to reveal all the finest details and structures visible in the original data. .

NGC 891 is one of the best examples of edge spiral galaxies. It was discovered by W. Herschel in 1784 and its distance is estimated at 30 million light years. The large field of view (1.9 degrees along the diagonals) covered by the above image contains many more small galaxies in the background.
