Invented and developed by civilian orthopedic trauma surgeon Professor Ian Pallister, the Surgical Advanced Mannequin (SAM model) is a leading training simulation model that can be inserted with various injury patterns, such as blast wounds and gunshot wounds. It can also ‘breathe’ and be pumped with ‘blood’ to simulate bleeding.

The innovative mannequin, refined over a ten-year development period, has enabled Armed Forces medical teams to participate in a highly realistic level of training during an Army Medical Services Training Center (AMSTC) clinical exercise.

Previous versions of the SAM model have also been used to train Ukrainian military surgeons.

Secretary of Defense, Veterans and Service Families Dr. Andrew Murrison, physician in the reserves, said:

These world-class training models are an excellent demonstration of the type of innovative equipment being produced by the UK Defense and our industrial partners. They play a vital role in providing advanced training to both our Ukrainian allies and our exemplary military medical and surgical teams in Britain, helping to ensure they remain the very best at what they do.

Professor Pallister developed the SAM model using CT scans and 3D printed masters of specific wounds such as a gunshot or pelvic injury. His latest version of the model can be intubated, remove dead ’tissue’ and use it for keyhole surgery.

Professor Ian Pallister said:

Carried aboard Royal Navy ships and deployed in land environments, SAM models are the product of years of continuous redesign and redevelopment and these evolving innovations would not have been possible without the close collaboration of colleagues in the Defense Medical Service and Defense Sciences. and Technology Laboratory.

Clinical Advisor for Deployed Hospital Care, Army Medical Services Training, Colonel Jonny Round said:

Traditionally at AMSTC we use a live victim actor with some makeup to create a list of symptoms and injuries. Professor Pallister’s model very realistically simulates combat wounds that require surgical intervention.

The surgeons will operate, and the entire team will train, in a field hospital similar to the hospital where they will be deployed. We are extremely proud that this training allows us to deliver world-class medical teams to operations.
