Police have charged a 17-year-old girl after investigating suspicious fires in Bonogin this week.

Emergency services responded to multiple fires taking place in grassland near Waltham Court, Bonogin Road and Brighton Lane between 2.45pm and 4.10pm on Tuesday, October 31.

No one was injured in the fires and the fire was quickly brought under control.

Initial investigation showed that the fires were deliberately set.

Following further investigation, police located and arrested a 17-year-old Bonogin girl today, November 2.

She has been issued a summons to appear for four counts of arson and is expected to appear at Southport Childrens Court on November 8.

Gold Coast District Disaster Coordinator Acting Chief Inspector Geoff Sheldon said police take arson very seriously.

“Let this serve as a warning as Queensland begins to battle what is sure to be a devastating bushfire season. We will investigate all fires to determine their origins and bring those responsible to justice if the fires are found to have been deliberately set.”
